To cut it or not?

Alright! Totally non-travel, art related. But I am going for a haircut this Thursday. And I think I need some advice. For the past year, I've been trying to grow my hair out and have finally succeeded, though still not long enough to do a full proper braid or any of these fancy hairstyles. But yup, for once, I can actually tie my hair up! I've been having short hairstyles since I was 7! I even had a little 'fin' ala David Beckham style when I was 16! Obviously, it was the worst cut ever, plain crazy! I've had asymmetrical hairstyles, pixie-cuts, ugly boy cuts topped with so much wax, boring 'susan' style cuts, DIY bangs, and yep, the list is endless....

So last year after being so sick of having short haircuts for 18 years, I decided to grow it out. The problem is, I have one of the thickest hair ever, it's amazing. I always joke how if the world ever runs out of paintbrushes, I could probably get some made from my hair. I have such thick hair, every time I get a haircut, I get charged double the price. And sometimes when I dye my hair at home, a box isn't enough. I have to use 2! ( And that's when I have short hair! ) The past year, my hair has started to become SO heavy and thick and bushy, it's not fun anymore. I've often dreamed of having beautiful long hair, like those ladies you see on Satorialist. But I have such a squarish/round face, everyone tells me I look so much older with my long hair. Sigh! And truth be told, I miss having my short hair quite a bit.

So I'm thinking, perhaps I should just go for it. Chop it off! I don't know why, but I'm nervous and totally chickening out! Perhaps I've grown used to having long hair? I think it's a love, hate relationship. I totally need guts like Ilona Royce! Ah! What should I do?! To go short or not? I'm thinking maybe an inch or 2 just below the ears? With a side parted fringe? Hmmm.

  1. What about having it layered - it might make it lighter but keep the length on the bottom layers.

I had my hair cut short a la Alice Cullen from Twilight - it was a little bit longer than hers but my hair is growing at a crazy rate lol. I need to redye mine but I keep chickening out - which is unlike me - I'm not sure what colour to go with but I need to make a decision and get on with it lol.

  2. Long hair is work. One of the best times in my life was when I cut it all off myself, just because I thought I should. I always wanted to have short hair and fit my head in hats finally (believe me, I understand the downsides of thick, lustrous hair). Nobody would cut it off for me: I had two haircuts in two days! The first woman talked me into layers. The second, into a bob. I have a long face and the bob was enough of a disaster that I finally let go of all my fear, bought a pair of clippers, and gave myself a pixie. I loved it. An adventure!

  3. My girlfriend had super thick hair and wears it long. Her hairdresser is able to thin it so it loses some weight but maintains her length. Might be worth a try?

  4. I like your short cut in the picture!

I had grown out my hair for a few years and it was really long, but it is really hard to maintain, and gets so dry & brocken (despite using really expensive fancy conditioners on it). I just got it cut a few months ago to just above my shoulders, and I am much happier with it.

When I go to the hairdressers, I say to the person to cut it so it is just long enough so I can tie it up if I need to, and to thin it as much as possible with out making it look like it has gross "layers". I have super thick/puffy hair too... it's really hard for me to get a style that works with my hair type and my face.

One thing never to say at hairdressers: that you are an artist!!! They will cut your hair "arty" which means they will cut it really short on one side and then long on the other and it will be embarrassing (and difficult to maintain without blowdrying it every day).

  6. Hello Dawn! Go for it! Keep in mind that it's totally possible to do braids and up-dos with pretty short hair. About eight inches at the longest is plenty. There are lots of glamourous hair do tutorials on the Internet that work well with short hair. It takes a bit of practise, but they will look so wonderful with all your hair!

  7. No advice but your not alone I do the same:) when my hair is short I yearn to grow it long and braid it, and the second it gets long I pine for short and easy care hehe so I usually have yoyo hair that's long n short in turns.

    Cheers

  8. you just need to find a good hairdresser ! One that understands crazy thick hair like yours AND MINE !! I couldnt go the layers as it would all stick out in its thick/curly-ness !!!! After years of short hair as a gal, i grew it long long long, until this year, turned 50 and woke up looking like HAGRID ..ugh..so ive gone back to short..funky,stylish..love it ..you choose...put a pic up wont you?

  9. yep you definitely need to trust your hairdresser! my hair was super short for ages (i'm growing it out now) but there was definitely a lot of trust involved when we went in for the chop.
because i wasn't sure about how short i wanted to go, my hairdresser and i gradually took it shorter and shorter until i was ready to go ahead.
and yep, definitely with sarah on that comment about being 'arty' - i've had to live through a few weird asymmetrical things going on (fortunately it was at the back of my head!))
